All systems go for long weekend race day

Cootamundra Turf Club will look to host a big crowd when they race on Sunday, October 1.

With the weather improving in recent weeks, Cootamundra Turf Club will be working hard to have their racecourse ready and raring for a bumper program on Sunday, October 1.

The annual October long weekend meeting didn’t go ahead in 2022, with wet weather forcing Racing NSW stewards to transfer the meeting to Narrandera Race Club.

The community then missed out on the Cootamundra picnic meeting in April, with three localised flooding events resulting in the track not being suitable to host the meeting.

Still, with some good drying weather on the radar, Cootamundra Turf Club President Greg Ewings said everything was on track for a triumphant return to racing.

“We are working towards having a meeting,” Ewings confirmed.

“Usually, you can’t do too much on the track until the weather breaks, like it has now.”

It will be a task for the committee, with the racecourse needing some tender loving care before the October race day.

“With the events of last year and the amount of water that went over the track, it meant we couldn’t race, but I’m sure we will have it ready,” Ewings said.

“We are coming off the place enduring three floods, and the ground has been tested, but now it’s starting to dry; we can move in and get things done.

“We’ve got to fertilise it twice and put some water on it as soon as everything dries out, but the committee is working hard as per normal.

“With everything that happened last year and then the picnic meeting not going ahead, It’s been a spell without racing for Cootamundra, but we’ll be doing everything we can to race.”
