We don’t have to wait very long for our favourite race of the day at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, with the 1800m Class Three Highway Handicap the first race on the program, jumping at 11.30 am.
It’s a very intriguing race this week, and Thunderbet’s John Patton has run his eye over the country-only race.
We currently have a good 4 track at Rosehill, and looking at the forecast for Saturday, there are meant to be late showers that won’t affect this race.
The rail is true, and every horse should get its chance with the dry track.
This week’s edition is one of the hardest Highway’s in recent times as most of these horses are racing over 1800m for the first time.
One of that can get the trip is Amarantz ($12).
She is a 5yo mare that won a Highway race back in February over this distance.
Her last start was a month ago at Hawkesbury, where she won over 2000m.
The only query I have is having a month off, and the horses it has beat haven’t done much since.
In saying that, the time was good, and she is trained by one of the leading young trainers in the state, Danielle Seib.
Another plus is that the flying Tyler Schiller, who rode her at Hawkesbury, is on her again.
I think the price is completely wrong, and I’ve rated her $5 drawn chance barrier 4, and not a lot of speed will get a great run.
Another horse in the race that looks like he can get the trip is Holstein ($6).
Training by Matthew Dunn, who prepared ten winners in July, including a Highway win, this horse has drawn the car park, but there’s not much speed underneath, and I expect him to jump and lead.
With Zac Llyold aboard and with a 1 1/2kg claim, it’s well in with the weights.
This horse has won over the trip in Brisbane, is fourth-up, and has been climbing up in the distance it’s last three starts. I think this horse is fit now and will be hard to run down if left alone.
The short-priced favourite I have put in for third is Burradanna ($1.85). The Wagga Wagga horse is prepared by astute trainer Peter Morgan.
I think it’s the best horse in the race, but it worries me the 1800m. Watching the last starts replay, I think it had every chance, but knowing the ability of both horse and trainer and with Jason Collett staying on board, I could very well be eating my words.
I have rated it a $3 chance, and I think it will get out in the market.
The ‘Each Way Play’ this week is Shafty ($51/$9.50) for David Blundell.
If you go back to its previous preparation, this horse won twice over 2000m.
I think it’s previous runs this preparation has been better then what it looks and tomorrow’s distance suits.
I doubt this stable would bring him to town if he wasn’t going to be competitive.
If he can bounce back his right in this, and the $51 on offer is massive odds.
