Picnic jockey Bessie Dimery is making a habit of winning feature races.

Only 36 rides and four wins into her burgeoning career, Dimery has won three Picnic Cups since late last year.

Riding at Burrangong Picnics in October, the 26-year-old teamed up with Wagga trainer Scott Spackman, winning on Ozzy The Equaliser in the Young Picnic Cup.

Earlier this year at Bedgerabong, the Wagga-based jockey helped the Peter Kirby-trained East Harlem to a win in the Bedgerabong Picnic Cup.

Then on Saturday, riding for her boss, Gary Colvin, who’s a native of Tullibigeal, Dimery guided Freddy’s Shock to a thrilling victory in the Tullibigeal Picnic Cup.

“It was very exciting to get a win for Gary, seeing as Tullibigeal is his hometown,” Dimery said.

“We were pretty confident, and Gary said just lead and run them off their feet, and that was the plan, and it worked out.”

When asked about her sensational run of results in Picnic Cups, Dimery was just happy to get the job done for trainers who had given her the opportunity.

“It’s just been a bit of luck,” she said.

“I appreciated getting that win for Spacky, as he is a lovely guy who is at the track every day, and the other one for Pete and Debbie, as they gave me my first ride.

“I’ve just been lucky to get on the right horses at the right times and be able to get the wins.”

From Kilmore and now based in Wagga, Dimery kicked off her career working with Danny O’Brien, but has spent the past four years working for Colvin while also riding work for Darrell Burnet.

Conceding she was too heavy to become a professional jockey, Dimery was happy riding at the picnics, while mixing her passions of racing and eventing.

“I love eventing, and I’m just having a bit of fun at the picnics while eventing as well,” Dimery said.

“I spend all day on horses, and with the racing, I have been doing this for less than 12 months, and I am feeling confident I can get out there and give it a go, but I do pick and choose where I ride.

“I have a horse going two-star now, and I’m hoping to get to the Melbourne International Three-Day event in June, so for me, I’ll balance that and riding at the picnics.”

In the immediate future, Dimery will turn her attention to the Grenfell picnic meeting on Saturday, April 11.
