Easter Saturday is one of the big days on the Australian racing calendar, with a massive 25 meetings scheduled nationwide.
The beautiful town of Tocumwal, located in the southern Riverina region of NSW, is a holiday destination for fishing, camping, aerial adventures, and relaxing by the river. It is also a hidden gem for country racing enthusiasts.
One of Tocumwal’s significant social events is the Easter Saturday Tocumwal Gold Cup meeting, which attracts thousands of visitors to the region.
The popular once-a-year meeting is headlined by the Cahill Transport Tocumwal Gold Cup (1300m). While the focus is on their six races, there is also a huge fashions on the field competition, complemented by their bar and canteen, entertainment, and socialising.
“It’s a day out for everyone,” Tocumwal Race Club president Gary Beer said.
“Everyone loves coming to the Toc (Tocumwal) races, dressing up in their finery, and enjoying a day at the races; it’s a meeting place.
“Especially after all the farmers bring their crops in, they get to let their hair down and enjoy Easter Saturday.
“It’s big for the community; people would have no idea, and it’s definitely the number one local event on the calendar.”
A volunteer-run club, Beer and his committee have been busy putting on the finishing touches ahead of Saturday’s meeting.
“We’ve been very busy,” Beer laughed.
“The marquees arrived yesterday, and they’ve been going up, and we’ve been putting out the umbrellas; I don’t think we’ve ever sold as many umbrellas.”
The Tocumwal racecourse is rated a good 3, but Beer believes the ground still has a lot of give.
“We’ve got bore water; we water just about every day, and we watered the track right up top last week,” Beer said.
“You can still stick your heel into the ground, so I’m confident it will be good races and the horses will love it.”
Fashions on the Field will again be a highlight of the day.
There will be multiple categories for racegoers to contest, including a new ‘Hat of the Day’ section.
The trackside entertainment will include a photo booth, which is sure to be a hit with punters of all ages. There is also a massive raffle, including 17 prizes. Tickets will be on sale on the day for $1 each.
There will be a fully licensed bar (strictly no BYO), and a bus service will run to and from the races. Information can be found on the Tocumwal Race Club Facebook page.
