The connections of star sprinter Mogo Magic will be searching for a breakthrough with their Scott Collings-trained Duporth gelding in the 1280m Open Handicap at Canberra on Friday.
The five-time winner boasts career earnings of over $300,000 and is four runs into his preparation after a strained ligament near his fetlock.
Following runs in stronger company at Eagle Farm, Rosehill, and Gosford, the Goulburn-trained galloper raced at Canberra last time out and was just beaten in a 1206m Open Handicap.
With four-kilogram claiming apprentice Dale Cole in the saddle, it was a welcome return to form for Mogo Magic, who appears to be returning to his best form.
The now 5YO remarkably won his first five races, including two Highways and a Benchmark 72 in Sydney, prompting Collings to thrust his rising star into the high-pressure environment of the prestigious $2m Kosciuszko at Randwick in October 2023.
While Mogo Magic is almost two years between wins, Dale is back in the saddle, meaning Mogo Magic will only carry 60.5kg in a winnable race.
While he is the current favourite, Mogo Majic runs into the Gratz Vella-trained Chop The Ice (Richard Bensley, gate 1), which knocked him off at Canberra last start.
On an entertaining seven-race program at Canberra’a Thoroughbred Park, the first race jumps at 12.30pm.
