It was 544 days in the making, but the Cassandra Stummer-trained Rebel’s Edge is finally back in the winner’s circle.

The ever-consistent four-year-old hit the ground running in 2021, winning two of his first five starts, registering a maiden victory at Muswellbrook in July before landing a Class One victory at Taree in November of that year.

Since then, he’s always been thereabouts without winning.

He started in four Highway Handicaps, finishing fourth to King’s Trust at Royal Randwick in December of 2021 and second to Baledon at Rosehill in August of last year.

Since returning from a 19-week spell, he had started six times this year, finishing no further back than fifth, with his biggest margin from any winner just 4.99 lengths.

Racing at Moree on Thursday in the 1600m Benchmark 58 Handicap, the Rebel Dane gelding out of One Carat Racer had Jake Pracey Holmes in the saddle.

Starting a well-supported $3.10 favourite, Rebel’s Edge was pushed to the lead from gate 11, and despite travelling a bit wide down the home straight, he landed a 0.24 of a length win from the Jane Clement-trained Bill Peyto (Kelsey Lenton, $6), while in third and 0.82 of a length back was the Natasha Hall-Antonio-trained Azoustic (Ashley Morgan, $41).

The win meant everything to Stummer, who was shedding tears of joy after the Moree win.

“He means the world to me; he is my best mate,” Stummer said.

“He was unlucky not to win last prep, and it’s good that he did it today.”

The Muswellbrook trainer wasn’t the only one who enjoyed a good day out at Moree, with Armidale trainer Stirling Osland preparing a winning double.

Mikayla Weir helped Sunchaser ($1.60) win an easy 1600m Maiden/Class One Plate, and Ash Morgan got everything out of Bean Ricking ($5) to win the 1400m Class One Handicap.

Arguably the most impressive win of the day belonged to the Craig Martin-trained Roussos ($7), with Morgan bringing up a winning double on the Tamworth runner in the 1200m Benchmark 66 Handicap.
