Stephen Meyer dies following tragic accident

The horse racing industry is in mourning following the tragic death of beloved Tamworth trainer Stephen Meyer.

The 71-year-old passed away from injuries sustained when the sole horse he trained, 9-year-old bay gelding Danza In The Dark, kicked him in the back on Friday during Day 1 of Scone’s two-day carnival, in NSW’s Hunter Region.

The incident occurred just before the gelding was set to race in the final event of the day, with the race delayed as emergency services attended to Meyer.

Danza In The Dark was declared fit to run and finished at the back of the field.

Meyer was treated by medical staff but sadly died overnight.

In a statement on Saturday, Racing NSW CEO Peter V’landys said Meyer was a highly regarded horseman with a lifelong love of horses.

“Operating out of Tamworth, he achieved notable success with his stable star, Danza In The Dark, winner of the 2024 Walcha and Quirindi Cups,” V’landys said in a statement.

“His humble approach and sportsmanship earned him wide respect across the industry.

“Every story he told always included mention of a horse.

“Racing NSW extends its deepest condolences to Stephen’s family and many friends.”

Meyer had six career wins as a trainer, all with his prized gelding Danza In The Dark.
