Unbeaten Cando Attitude makes statement at Wagga

Exciting filly Cando Attitude lived up to her name with an impressive first-up victory in the 1000m Benchmark 58 Handicap at Wagga Wagga on Thursday.

Raced by Barbara Joseph, Paul and Matt Jones, the 3YO D’Argento filly travelled to Wagga unbeaten following her two wins last preparation, where she got the job done at Moruya and Nowra in October.

After a little freshen-up, Cando Attitude was on her best behaviour at Wagga for regular jockey, Claire Ramsbotham, and won like a horse going places, putting away older and more experienced sprinters.

“We only gave her one jump out, and we were a little worried about going to the 1000m against the older hard heads that keep on running, and she did hit a flat spot but came through that, pricked the ears, and always looked like she was going to win,” Jones told Country Punter.

“She is delivering on what we see at home; we’ve got an opinion of her, and she showed it as a two-year-old, but she had a minor setback and twinged a hamstring.

“So, she had four months off, and we took it slowly with her, with little preps in and out, which probably worked out better for her.”

Racing fans are certainly getting excited about the Canberra-trained galloper, but Jones is reluctant to think too far ahead, with a 1200m Class Three Highway Handicap at Royal Randwick on February 7 likely the filly’s next assignment.

“She has come through it well and ate as much as I expected her to after a race,” Jones said.

“She was a little bit hot last time in, but she’s been really good, and she is getting more resilient.

“She is standing up to trackwork better than her first prep, and her constitution on race day is good, and it means we are able to give her multiple runs.

“We don’t want to think too far ahead, but we’ll probably look at a Highway on February 7.

“She is only three, and people are talking Country Championships, but we probably aren’t thinking about that yet, but if she did come out and win a Highway, then we might take notice and consider the Country Championships.”

Cando Attitude is out of the mare Because We All Can, making her a half-sister to seven-time winner Louie’s Legacy, who’s won a Merimbula Cup (1400m), Cootamundra Cup (1600m), and Forbes Cup (1600m).

Jones is confident that with time, Cando Attitude will get over a further trip.

She is certainly bred to get out over further,” Jones said.

“She’s a half to old campaigner Louise’s Legacy, who’s won over 1600m, and could run a bit further if things went his way, so she should get out over a mile, maybe as a four-year-old.

“With her, everything happens quickly, but she is getting better, and when she went to Wagga, from the time she stepped off the float to when she came home, she behaved herself.”
